This video begins at Neos Kosmos, gliding gracefully southward over Fyri Ammos and the hidden gem of Kalamitsi—each a sparkling jewel in the crown of Kythera.
The renowned traditional village of Trifyllianika on Kythera boasts a rich history of settlement and a legacy of distinguished sons and daughters who have made significant contributions to the island and beyond. Just a short walk from the bustling center of Potamos, Trifyllianika remains a world unto itself, with its stately mansions and picturesque town square. This video seeks to capture the village's unique charm, offering a glimpse to those who may not have the chance to experience it in person.
With no basic bus service to speak of, the island of Kythera is aiming high with its ambitious public transportation plans – a full metro system. Over 80 stations will one day span the island, connecting even the smallest, most remote one-goat-hamlets to the vibrant cultural and economic hubs of Livadi, Hora, and Potamos. Both visitors and locals will be able to board automated carriages at the island’s northernmost beach, Agios Nikolaos, and speed beneath the island to the capital, Hora, in less time than it takes to enjoy a delicious Kytherian gyros – salad included.
In celebration of the release of the feature film "Lost on Kythera", we designed and crafted a solid bronze coin, featuring the legendary goddess Aphrodite on one side and her long-lost temple on the reverse.
While I strongly support renewable energy, the proposal from half a dozen energy companies to turn Kythera into a virtual pincushion with 140 massive wind turbines doesn’t exactly inspire joy. The island’s energy needs could easily be met by just two large turbines, while the rest would be supplying power to the Peloponnese – a region with ample space and mountain ridges ideal for generating its own wind energy. Kythera’s largely unspoiled landscape deserves better than to be marred by towering turbines, installed primarily to line the pockets of big companies chasing subsidies. So, screw them.
In 2021, I published the Greek edition of The Kytherians, skillfully translated by the talented Theodora Kapralou. Her translation was so exceptional that many bilingual readers confided that they found the Greek version superior to the original English. To each of them, I reply, "Yes, something gets lost in the original."
From the blurb:
While Tarzan the sly taxi driver takes everyone for a ride and ‘Petros the Pig’ from Potamos eats a mountain, monks and shepherds take turns losing and finding icons on windy slopes and two old brothers try to get their mule over a cliff. Between wife-swapping and goat seduction, The Kytherians takes us through the eventful lives of islanders crazy and endearing enough to make you want to get there on the next leaky ferry.
Biochar is a material that has sparked growing interest among scientists, environmentalists, and farmers alike for its remarkable potential in sustainable agriculture and climate change mitigation. At its core, biochar is a type of charcoal produced from organic materials such as wood, crop residues, and manure through a process called pyrolysis—where biomass is heated in a low-oxygen environment. While it may seem simple, biochar’s unique properties and its applications in soil management have far-reaching implications for agriculture, environmental conservation, and the global fight against climate change.
Most of this collection of drone footage was shot in 2016 and was then updated in 2020 with new material. Back in 2016 most lenses on consumer videos were extreme wide angle ("fisheye"). That is why the perspective of much of this collection seems a bit extreme.
This was an article published in Neos Kosmos and elsewhere to increase awareness of plans to inundate the island with giant wind generators to send power to the Peloponnese. It would have catastrophically scarred the horizon of Kythera for generations. Although much of the population of Kythera support environmental projects and renewable energy, there are less invasive ways to make Kythera net-zero and even to produce more than it needs . more

I of course did not create this logo, which is historic — see below. But I did make the English version and digitalise it so others, like my cousin Michele, could put it on T-shirts etc.
This emblem originates from the short-lived Autonomous Administration of Kythera During World War I’s National Schism between royalists and Venizelists, Kytherian revolutionaries severed ties with the monarchy on February 17, 1917, proclaiming an independent state. Though this autonomous republic lasted only four months until national reunification in June 1917, Kythera famously entered diplomatic history by unilaterally declaring war on Imperial Germany.

Back in 1989 I was invited by a friend from Kythera - Stefan Kinkele - to accompany him on a muleback journey from the Greek-Albanian border to the southern point of the Pindus range of mountains. We bought some mules in a small friendly village in Kozani and journeyed hundreds of kilometers through areas of spectacular beauty which seemed one-hundred years behind the rest of the world...
In 2006 I was invited to Bethlehem in Palestine to speak at an educational conference there. While there I shot a few hundred pictures and when the conference organisers saw them they asked me to put together an exibition, called "Sumud", arabic for "Steadfastness", which was then shown first in Bethlehem 6 months later, and since then each year in different European cities.
In herbal and naturopathy circles the name Juliette de Baïracli Levy is well known. She lived on Kythera for many years in the 1980s and 90s. A wonderful woman, full of folklore and knowledge, she wrote books on herbalism and her travels, many of which are still on sale. On Kythera she stayed in a tiny stone house a few hundred metres from the stunning second Palaiopoli beach which is still referred to by those who knew her as "Juliette's Beach".
I was born in the village of Trifyllianika. The name Maneas is a nickname of the Gerakitis family since my grandfather’s time. I have experienced the natural environment of Kythera at first hand and became interested in it when I saw it was being destroyed by illegal and criminal activities.
Watch on YouTubeAs the historical island of Aphrodite's birth, as well as once being the home to the holiest temple dedicated to her, Kythera is the natural place to host the first ever Museum to Aphrodite. In addition to other exhibition wings dedicated to Kythera's history and flora and fauna, the Kythera Aphrodite Museum could feature a lush central court-yard displaying various sculptures and installations with an Aphrodite theme, as well as an academic facility with workshops and accommodation for visiting researchers working on Kytherian projects.
